While it has its place, conventional medicine for animals and ‘modern technology’ have failed our pets in many ways.

The following conditions are very common and can be managed with natural remedies made special for our canine friends.

- Dogs are eating poor quality food or they are allergic to the food they have eaten for years. Signs may be as simple as the dog showing signs of lethargic for some time. In this case a change in diet and supplements can fix the dog up. Learn more on Healthiest Dog Food

- Using a harsh shampoo causes the dog’s hair to fall out. It also causes skin irritations. Fix the problem with mild shampoo and adding fish oil to the diet. Get More Info on PetAlive Skin & Coat Tonic to Keep Your Pet’s Coat and Skin Healthy

- Dog bad breath is unbearable! This can be from bad teeth or periodontal (gum) disease. A deep cleaning will help by removing bacteria and scraping the teeth clean. But what if your dog cannot safely be put under for the cleaning? There are products to freshen the breath and kill oral bacteria safely.

- Certain herbs are known to support the health of the thyroid. Get more info on PetAlive Thyroid Soothe - Homeopathic remedy temporarily soothes the thyroid, heart and endocrine systems.

I’ve been using natural products for my dogs for over 20 years. Tara, one of my Shelties lived to be 18-years-old! She was in good health, on no medicine and was very happy. I never used anything synthetic around her. She ate a healthy dog food diet with it mostly home made the last 3 years of her life. She got exercise and lots of love! Using natural products around and with your dog helps to keep them healthy and means you have them longer to love!

If your dog has problems with his ears it will be easy to see the signs. Dog ear infections will most often have odor, the dog will scratch of rub the ears and head, some discharge in the ears, red swollen ear flaps or ear canal or the dog shakes his head or tilts it to one side.
PetAlive Ear Dr. for Ear Infections and Ear Mites.

Ear infections are one of the most common conditions vets see in pets. Otitis Externa is the medical name for inflammation of the outer ear canal. It is estimated that up to 20% of the dog population is affected by this ear disease.

Allergies – food or atopy- can cause problems for dogs. Parasites such as ear mites are also common as are bacterial and yeast infections. Sometimes the ear will have something lodged in the canal such as a foxtail from plants. One of the most common causes with certain breeds will be the ear environment, e.g., excess moisture and ear anatomy. Floopy ears that are heavy or very hairy will stop the air flow and cause a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast infections.

PetAlive Ear Dr. for Ear Infections and Ear Mites.

Keeping the dogs ears clean is the key to healthy ears. Do weekly checks for your dog’s ears. It is normal for a slight waxy buildup. Cleaning up to three times a week helps if your dog swims a lot or has a history of ear disease. Excess hair around the ear can be clipped to allow more air flow. Follow your veterinarian’s recommendation on how to treat any underlying condition that predisposes your dog to ear problems.

Puppy Dog

For a holistic natural way to help keep ears healthy I like this ear health remedy PetAlive Ear Dr. for Ear Infections and Ear Mites. It keeps ear canals clear and free of blockages. Maintains health in the middle ear structures. Soothes and conditions ear passages to prevent common itching and scratching. Maintains normal balance of flora in the ear canal.

Here’s a helpful video showing how to clean your dog’s ears. Do not be tempted to probe your pet’s ears with Q-tips- you will only do damage!

Dogs can benefit from natural coconut oil as much as their people do.

Add cold pressed coconut oil to your dog’s food to help trim thick (overweight) dogs, conditions dry shabby-looking fur, often gives relief to painful arthritis or ligament problems in senior dogs or working dogs, can help balance the dog’s thyroid , coconut oil helps candida, keeps gives dogs a natural source of energy and helps dogs smell better, (no doggy smell on coat or breath).

My favorite use of organic virgin coconut oil – improves digestion and nutrient absorption. Cooking with coconut oil is easy. I replace all oils in the doggy treats I bake with Nutiva coconut oil.

People have found with topical use their dogs ear infections improve, as do flea allergies, contact dermatitis, and other skin irritations. It’s also been shown to help get rid of moles, heal sores and condition the dog’s dry cracked feet pads.

The oil can be applied to sores. It is slow absorbing so try to keep the dog occupied for several minutes after applying it. Try it on hot spots, sore foot pads, minor bites or even to clean ears.

Coconut oil will deodorize anything it touches and will make your dog smell better when it’s fed to him.

Dogs love the taste of coconut and many will lick it off a spoon. The best coconut oil is unrefined virgin coconut oil. If your dog’s don’t like the sweet taste of organic unrefined virgin coconut oil, buy the expeller pressed coconut oil. It can be feed alone or mixed in dog food. Start very slow. Work up to a teaspoon a day for each 20 pounds of body weight. If you notice greasy stools cut back the oil for a few days. The oil will help detox the system so it’s important to go slow and over several weeks work up to the full dosage.

Visit Nutiva coconut oil site for more information.

I’m sharing a video from Dr. Joseph Mercola. Yes he is speaking to us about the benefits of coconut oil for people but the exact same message goes for dogs and cats.

Dog dental care is just as important for our dogs as it is for us. It doesn’t mean you have to buy special toothpaste. Sometimes a doggy toothbrush is even optional.

Let me explain. If you can add herbs to your dogs drinking water or food then you might not ever have to brush their teeth. Think about how much your dog hates having a toothbrush in his mouth and do you even know how much good you are doing?

Maintaining your dog’s dental health is a very important part of caring for your dog. Calculus is the brown build-up of plaque found extending downwards on the tooth from the gum line. Calculus is a haven for bacteria which can have serious consequences for your dog’s general health.

These bacteria can not only cause abscesses and tooth loss but can have further effects – even resulting in organ damage as the bacteria are carried from the mouth through the bloodstream.

Dogs and cats make much fuller use of their teeth than humans do – using them in ways we usually use our hands. It stands to reason, therefore, that maintaining canine and feline dental health is essential to their well-being (and of course pets can’t wear dentures!).

Therefore, the best thing you can do for your dog or cat’s dental health is to embark on a prevention program and look out for your pet’s teeth and gums before it’s too late.

Bad breath is usually the first indication that your pet’s teeth and gums need attention. Bacteria in the mouth and the development of calculus produce foul-smelling breath in pets. Regular inspection of the teeth is also a good idea to establish your pet’s level of dental health.

Normal teeth in pets are shiny white all the way to the line of the gum. Any deposits or build up of a dark yellow or brown substance on the teeth, especially near the gum line, indicates a problem with calculus.

Chewing on hard food generally cleanses the teeth of calculus, especially the tips of the teeth. However, be aware that the gum line is slightly indented and can harbor the calculus-causing bacteria for months on end without being affected by your pet’s eating.

The gums should appear a healthy pink color and there should be a clear delineation between gums and teeth.

Ok I’ve used many products with my dogs (and cat) and have found that certain herbs work best. Check this spray or granduals here.

Dogs are somewhat like their owners, they tend to get thick in the mid section with age. This is due to less exercise, high amounts of carbs in dog food, or even the extra treats we give to show our love. Many times it’s the human’s fault the dog gets a little pudgy. It’s also common for medical issues to cause a dog’s waist to thicken.

It’s possible to give a dog natural herbs and ingredients to help improve/support functions such as:
1. Healthy digestion
2. Support efficient metabolism
3. Support healthy livers and effective processing of dietary fat
4. Naturally maintain healthy thyroid functioning
5. Provide natural detox action
6. Assist with maintaining healthy body weight in combination with a healthy eating plan
7. Support healthy energy levels and general well-being

All of the functions above need to be working properly to keep a dog’s weight normal. Natural dog remedies can be effective in supporting a body functioning to process food efficiently to keep your dog fit and trim.

Dogs respond to natural medicine in different ways, some dogs experience immediate results while many other dog owners have reported optimal benefits taking effect in their pets within 3-6 weeks. To ensure your dog receives optimum results it is important to administer natural remedies as directed and remain consistent.

Finding a natural pain relief for dogs is getting easier than in years past. A few months ago my dog was running up the stairs when his back went out. He was flat on his belly, all four legs straight out, he couldn’t get his feet back under him. He was whimpering and in obvious pain. I lifted him into the car and took off to his doctor’s office.

After x rays we found that Riley had a compressed disc in his back. I could see where it was because his back was slopping downwards with a little raised hump where the bad disc was. His doctor sent him home with prednisone to be taken for 3 weeks and recommended a visit with a chiropractor.

I’m 100% for alternative treatments but you have to understand the kind of dog Riley is. He is fearful and will not let anyone except me put their hands all over him without him being muzzled. He’s NOT a candidate for chiropratory.

I gave him a raw diet with lots of grass-fed beef and pasture raised chicken. He improved without needing any more treatments but he wasn’t completely out of pain. I wasn’t going to keep him on meds so I just kept a close eye on him and gave him supplements with omega 3 fatty acids, glucosamine, chondroitin and cod liver oil. He improved but was not back to normal. His back and midsection would roll when he walked. It was like he didn’t know where to place his feet. (He did have some mild paralysis in his right front foot)

Two months ago I started researching a company that has drug free pain patches. I was looking for a human product because I have a frozen shoulder that is being stubborn with getting range of motion back. The patches worked better than I expected (I now have around 97% range of motion in my shoulder) so I decided to try them on Riley’s back. I could see the compressed disc because the little hump was still there. I patched him up and within 3 or 4 minutes his pain was visible eased. The humped spot was smaller and Riley was walking straight again. Was it a fluke? Could have been. Is it still working for Riley? Yep it is! Will it work for other dogs? I don’t know, what if it does? That would be so cool.

Riley doesn’t need the patch very often because the patches are stimulating his body the way acupuncture does. They are acupuncture patches with out needles. I don’t need them very often for my shoulder. I keep them in the medicine cabinet along side the band-aids for when anyone has a pain.

I was convinced these pain patches work so I am marketing the product for animals and their people! Note the patches are not “marketed” as a pet product through the company. I know what Riley’s results were. Always do your “Due diligence” on any product you purchase for you or your dog.
